Both KitKat and Lollipop are versions of Android OS. Android 5.0 “Lollipop” is the latest version of the Android mobile operating system developed by Google. It was unveiled on June 25, 2014 during Google I/O, it became available as official over-the-air (OTA) updates on November 12, 2014 for select devices that run distributions of Android serviced by Google, including Nexus and Google Play edition devices. Its source code was made available on November 3, 2014.

  1. Google’s Android 5.0 Lollipop (codenamed as “Android L”) became officially available from November 3rd, 2014.
  2. Android 4.4.4 KitKat was debuted on Motorola’s Nexus 6 and HTC’s Nexus 9.
  3. It comes with a redesigned user interface built around a responsive design language referred to as “material design”.
  4. Major improvements to the notification system which allow notifications to be accessed from the lockscreen, and to be displayed within other apps as banners across the top of the screen.
  5. Introduced new Android Runtime (ART) officially replacing Dalvik for improved application performance, and with changes intended to improve and optimize battery usage, known internally as Project Volta.
  6. Lollipop also contains major new platform features for developers, with over 5,000 new APIs added for use by applications.
  7. ART is a cross-platform runtime which supports the x86, ARM, and MIPS architectures in both 32-bit and 64-bit environments.
  8. Lollipop also aims to improve battery consumption through a series of optimizations known as “Project Volta”.
  9. The new developer tool called “Battery Historian” can be used for tracking battery consumption by apps while in use.
  10. The Android Extension Pack APIs also provide graphics functions such as new shaders, aiming to provide PC-level graphics for 3D games on Android devices.
  11. The songs, photos, apps, and even recent searches from one of your Android devices can be immediately enjoyed across all of your Android devices.
  12. With Lollipop, your tablet shows your (outlook like reading pane) inbox alongside the message you have open, while your watch shows new emails as they arrive.
  13. Improved network handoffs resulting in limited interruption in connectivity. For example, continue your video chat or VoIP calls without interruption as you leave the house and switch from your home Wi-Fi back to cellular.
